    Question about paint on `67 427 3x2 w/A/C Silver/Black

Help please! My `67 had been sitting in friend`s garage for 30 years, since I sold it to him in 1987. I bought it back in Jan. 2017 and started driving it a bit. When I bought it in Jan., it had a paint bubble size of a half-dollar coin right over the battery. It has grown now to multiple bubbles almost 2 feet long- in same area of the fender. This is right by the hood "slot" middle left fender, right up against the opening. It is Silver , factory type paint, that was a repaint in 1981. Do NOT want the whole car repainted, as still chewing what I spent repurchasing the car! Also- rest of the paint is fine, with a very few small cracks here & there only. Nice & shiney. I know Silver is almost impossible to match perfectly, but I would be happy with just a sand&spot for now. Ideas, PLEASE? Thnx, Wade M. Russell

Wade......assuming your reshoot in 81 was lacquer DIY spot painting with silver metallic can be done but even with the rub out it will be visible both with metallic and fade issues. I would consider repainting the entire fender.

        Wade,
Welcome to the Tech Board Forum. I think your bigger concern right now is what is causing the bubbling? It sounds like it could be caused by a previous spill of brake fluid either from the top side or sprayed from underneath the fender. Either way, repainting before assessing the cause is going to be a cause of much consternation.

Leif gave the response that is needed - find the underlying cause FIRST then tackle the problem of the bubble and repaint the entire fender

OK....... If you assume the contamination IS brake fluid from long-ago, what's best way to remove it before painting??

Ralph - One particular ingredient of brake fluid is the most damaging; Polyethylene glycol, which is also found in some solvents, it will cause a chemical reaction that is very corrosive to lacquer paint. I would probably try some Ultimate Compound, if it is even fixable. If not, as suggested you are going to need to completely strip the fender and remove the brake fluid contamination on BOTH sides of the fender as you obviously have "bleed through"

Wade, did this car ever reside in/near Jackson, TN, about 1980-84? Dave

No Dave, I don't think so. It is not a "Paul Kitchens" car. But he had some nice ones! I bought this car in Huntsville,AL the 1st time in 1969 from orig. owner w/19,000miles. I got drafted in Army and had to sell it in June 1970. Kept trying to buy it back after Army, but the guy sold it to a fellow in Atlanta that took the car to the Portland/Vancouver,WA area in approx. 1975. I bought the car [2nd time] from a guy he sold it to in Vancouver in 1985 and had it shipped back to Hsv.,AL. I then sold it in 1987 to purchase some commercial real estate. The guy I sold it to [Knoxville,TN] drove it 1,900miles in 30 years!! I just bought the car for the 3rd time [a charm?] in Jan. 2017 !!!! The car is still all original, 47,000miles, and has had 1 repaint that is now bubbling in a few places. Interior looks NEW ! I am a lucky duck to get it back, and hopefully- third time will last! Thanks for asking, Wade

I had met a guy in the early 80s with an AC 400 HP silver/black coupe. He offered it to me for 18k. A PRIME price in the 80s...I should have done it!
